Sericulture Asthra
Diseases are the major constraint in silk cocoon production inIndia. Disinfection of silkworm rearing environment, appliances, silkworm body and maintenance of hygiene during silkworm rearing plays a major role in prevention of diseases in silkworm rearing.
Formalin, bleaching powder and chlorine dioxide are generally used inIndiafor disinfection and maintenance of hygiene during silkworm rearing. Bleaching powder being corrosive & unstable and chlorine dioxide for its high cost are having some reservations among the sericulturists.
To overcome these hurdles and also to reduce the cost of Disinfection, “ASTHRA” a new generation powerful Disinfectant has been jointly developed by Central Sericulture Research & Training Institute, (Central Silk Board), Srirampura, Manandavadi Road, Mysore and our Research Department.
“ASTHRA” is a new generation, powerful germicidal with higher level of available Chlorine thus very effective as a spray Disinfectant. It is highly recommended for disinfection of all type of Rearing house, Rearing Equipments & surroundings as well as for the daily maintenance of Rearing hygiene. Its application is simple and highly cost effective.
Advantage of “ASTHRA” over other Alternatives:
1. “ASTHRA” is a powerful germicidal, highly effective against all silkworm pathogens.
2. "ASTHRA” is a multipurpose spray disinfectant. It can be used for:-
(a) Room Disinfectant
(b) Disinfection of Rearing Equipments.
(c) For daily use for hygiene, i.e., washing hands & feet, daily cleaning of rearing house safe disposal of diseased silkworm.
3. It is low cost, strong, easy to handle and transport.
4. “ASTHRA” is highly soluble (up to 95%) in water. Hence, no slurry is formed which would block the nozzle of the sprayer. The alternative such as bleaching powder and Chlorine dioxide in slaked lime, forms slurry which blocks the nozzle of sprayer and cause damages.
5. Preparation of “ASTHRA” disinfectant solution is easy.
6. “ASTHRA” is effective at low dose, under all environmental conditions, less corrosive recommended concentration.
7. High cost benefit ratio.
8. It is most stable and the shelf life is about a year with minimal loss of chlorine.
9. The storage and transportation is easy, as “ASTHRA” is available in powder form. The quantity required is only 100gms for 200 lts. of water in comparison to bulky 4kgs of Bleaching powder and 5Ltrs. of Chlorine-Di-Oxide/Phenol Disinfectant
